How Smart Products Work: Harnessing Energy for Sustainability

Energy from motion

A simple push of a button releases enough energy to turn lights on or household appliances off, thanks to energy harvesting. Our battery-free switch modules contain a tiny electro-mechanical energy converter that uses this movement to generate energy and send a radio signal.

These energy-efficient switches look just like conventional models, offering options from simple on/off or up/down switches to sliding and rotary controls for light intensity, color, heating, home entertainment, or security systems. They are always ready for immediate use by anyone in the house.

Moreover, this technology extends beyond wireless switches to window contact sensors that indicate when a window is open, or water sensors that use a swellable material to activate the energy converter. Installed under washing machines or bathtubs, these sensors prevent water damage.

Energy from light

Our wireless sensor modules feature small solar cells that capture light and convert it into energy. They require minimal light, as little as 200 lux, to operate sensors for humidity, temperature, window contacts, or presence detection. These sensors store energy internally, ensuring up to four days of operation without a new energy supply.

EnOcean sensor modules also use this energy for communication via various low-energy wireless standards (EnOcean, Zigbee, Bluetooth®).

Energy from temperature

A temperature difference of just 2° Celsius is sufficient to generate enough energy for a wireless sensor to operate. Using a Peltier element and a DC/DC converter, this method is ideal for self-powered heating valves that utilize the temperature difference between the heater and the environment to adjust settings and communicate via radio with a solar-powered room controller.

Energy Production the Sustainable Way

At EnOcean, we have been leveraging renewable energy for over 20 years to power our self-powered wireless sensors and switches. Thanks to energy harvesting, our smart products eliminate the need for batteries and wires, operating independently with energy sourced from movement, light, or temperature.

We achieve sustainability by implementing technologies that consume minimal resources, enhancing energy efficiency in homes, buildings, and installations. This includes automatically lowering temperatures and turning off lights when rooms are unoccupied, or optimizing space usage when not needed.

Digitization with self-powered sensors that provide essential raw data makes this possible. Reducing the use of copper and PVC in walls (due to the absence of cables) and utilizing energy harvesting further contribute to sustainability.
