EnOcean at embedded world 2014: batteryless energy to power the Internet of Things

– First prototype of a self-powered wireless transmitter in the worldwide 2.4 GHz ISM band
– Developer kits for energy harvesting wireless solutions meet specific requirements

Oberhaching/Munich, January 22, 2014

At embedded world 2014 (February 25-27, Nuremberg), EnOcean, the world leader in energy harvesting wireless solutions, will demonstrate the first prototype of a self-powered wireless transmitter in the 2.4 GHz ISM band. With this, EnOcean addresses the increasing demand for connected objects on the route to the Internet of Things. EnOcean will be exhibiting in hall 1/1-170 at the HY-LINE Computer Components partner booth.

EnOcean is a technology and market leader in energy harvesting wireless solutions. The company’s self-powered devices, which gain their energy from motion, light or temperature differences, are already well established in the commercial building automation sector. In addition, EnOcean develops its comprehensive energy harvesting portfolio to address direct communication between devices in a network and over the Internet – the Internet of Things. This encompasses new application fields such as cold chain, server and environmental monitoring, structural health monitoring, as well as smart street lighting and specific consumer applications.

Self-powered transmitter in 2.4 GHz

At the HY-LINE booth, visitors can experience a prototype of an energy harvesting wireless transmitter operating in the internationally approved 2.4 GHz ISM band. Powered by EnOcean’s ECO 200 electro-mechanical energy converter, the press of a button is converted into a wireless signal, enabling data communication without cables and batteries. The prototype also uses an additional NFC radio (Near Field Communication) to pair the transmitter functionalities with the receiver using a smart phone. This opens up many new ways for system developers and users to integrate batteryless components into their network.

„The prototype of the 2.4 GHz transmitter shows that, based on our proven module platform and new chip generations, we are able to power several existing radio protocols with energy harvesting. This opens the door to a realm of new applications for EnOcean and is particularly interesting for self-powered consumer applications that already use 2.4 GHz radios. For example, push messages from a personalised alert button to the cell phone of a care worker,” says Matthias Poppel, Chief Operation Officer, EnOcean GmbH.

Developer kits for all cases

In addition, the company will show several developer kits at the booth. These cost-effective platforms enable OEMs to easily develop energy harvesting wireless solutions for specific purposes. EnOcean will present the ESK 300 starter kit – the easy way to get started with energy harvesting wireless technology, the EDK 350 developer kit for extensive developments and the EDK 352 extension kit for thermal applications.
